Plot: AOKANA, In a world where flying is as simple as riding a bicycle, there is a popular sport called “Flying Circus.” The protagonist once had a bright future ahead of him in that field of sports but due to an overwhelming defeat in addition to a certain other reason, he has left that field. However, he meets the transfer student Kurashina Asuka and regains his passion as he teaches her how to fly. With his situation changed, he participates once again in the Flying Circus.
Impression: AOKANA looked pretty good and has a light-hearted feel to it. The female characters are all a bit quirky and on the Moe side but are very likable. Specially the main female character who’s a complete airhead and clumsy. We got to know very little about the main protagonist from the 1st episode and he got less screen time. But its pretty evident that he has a mysterious past from certain dialogues and his reluctance towards flying. I like protagonists with mysterious pasts. This might turn out to be a sporty anime with tournament and stuff. Which is not bad. You don’t see sport/romance/drama very often.
The animation of AOKANA looks really good as expected from Gonzo. The music is pretty upbeat and nice. Not much to say about it from the first episode only. It was kind of an opener or buildup type episode, sort of laying the ground work for a better story. I found it interesting and will probably follow it. If you’re looking for a light-hearted quirky anime, give this one a try.
