Impression: Being a HUGE fan of the Ace Attorney games I was extremely excited when I first heard that it will be getting an anime. With a hugely successful game franchise and having a very good live action movie, the anime has a lot of expectations to live up to and it does to some extent. The anime was able to pull off the courtroom intensity as well as the signature Ace Attorney comedy antics quite well. Overall from the first episode, it looked good.
The story of the first episode was the prelude/tutorial part of the game and it was quite nicely wrapped up in one episode. The main story will be starting from episode two and that is when I hope the show will take off properly. In the first episode we are introduced with 3 of the main characters of the show Naruhodo Ryuichi (Phoenix Wright), Chihiro and Yahari. The anime has stayed true to the original character traits. Seeing your childhood courtroom hero come to life was a nice treat for me. The clumsy but intelligent Naruhodo, the wise and mature mentor Chihiro and the over excited, foul mouthed Yahari were pulled off to a perfection. To top that off, hearing my favorite soundtrack ‘Objection’ from the game made me very nostalgic. I can’t wait to hear ‘Cornered’ redone in this show.
Moving on to the bad part. The animation is bad. Well not really BAD but bad in A-1 pictures standard. After the animation presented in anime like Anohana and Erased you expect A LOT from A-1 pictures. The animation of Ace Attorney made me feel like what the hell is this load of bull?? It looked very low quality as if A-1 pictures had assigned this anime to their rookie interns or something. To top that off, the opening theme was just as bad with a very forgettable song and low quality production. The way Naruhodo was skipping around like a little moe girl in the opening theme, made me doubt if A-1 pictures was even taking this show seriously. It was very disappointing to see.
With that said, I’m waiting at the edge of my seat for the next episode. The first episode is a solid 7/10 for me.
