Light Yagami, a high school prodigy stumbles upon a diary in his school field. Out of curiosity he took the diary home and read what’s inside. He came to know the diary is called ‘Death Note’ and all the necessary conditions and rules of using the ‘Death Note’ was mentioned inside. At first he is skeptical. He thinks it’s some kind of a joke but upon giving a trial run he finds that it it indeed the real deal. Any name you write in the death note with his/her face in his mind will die. He realizes that he has stumbled upon a something extremely powerful. With this he can finally change the world. How will Light use this death note? Are his motives noble or evil?
The concept of Death Note is pretty unique. It is about a boy who obtains a death note that can kill a person by writing his/her on it and this anime is produced by madhouse. If you are familiar with their works you will know how amazing they are when it comes to pulling off amazing plots. Monster, Trigun, Hellsing Ultimate, Nana, Hunter x hunter, One outs etc are some of their notable works. The show did a terrific job to an already terrific concept. Being a relatively small anime it has no pacing issue. While it is criticized for losing its charm after a certain point which I believe is totally unjustifiable. The show has set such a lofty standards that minor dip towards the later part was a bit hard to swallow I presume
While the concept is really fascinating but the characters are not too far off either. Death note has some amazing characters under its belt. While 4-5 characters are the main focal point of the anime but the other characters were important as well and all of them had more or less influential role to play on the context of the plot. . The main attraction of this anime are Light Yagami and L. Due to their uniqueness, intellect, intelligence and their ability of deduction has earned them a place in the anime character hall of fame. There is no anime forum in this world where people have not debated about them. These two created a revolution as well as a worldwide group of fanboys/fangirls, myself included. I’m sure Light and L are in every anime lover’s top 10 anime MCs ever.
Here are some notable characters from the anime:
The visuals are great. The color choice was apt going by the theme of the anime. Mostly dark but striking colors were used to draw out the dark and mysterious atmosphere of the anime. The drawing is also good. They kept it simple while madhouse animated them to near perfection.

The music in this anime was exceptional. Especially the opening and ending themes. This was the anime that got me into Japanese music. It introduced me to two amazing bands, Nightmare and Maximum The Hormone. The first set of opening and ending themes were done by Nightmare, “The World” and “Alumina”. The second set of opening and ending themes were done by Maximum The Hormone, “What’s Up People” and “Zetsubou Billy”. All four songs are amazing and are still some of my most favorite Japanese songs till date.
The background scores were great as well. They went well with the situations. Yoshihisa Hirano and Hideki Taniuchi did a great job composing them. They added another dimension to the anime.
Death Note is one of the finest anime there is. If you are sucker of psychological anime you will love it. The anime has some things that can put you off a bit but I can’t give you the spoilers why not keep that a suspense. I really enjoyed the anime and it is a great part of my childhood memories.
Death Note is a must watch anime for any anime lover. Even if you don’t love anime, you need to watch it. While there is a common complaint that “Death Note is shit from 2nd season”. While that may be partially true, the statement is unjustified. Death Note set the bar really high in the first season. The 2nd season was not on the same level as first but that by no means makes the 2nd season bad. It’s still amazing. The only reason people are disappointed, is because they were expecting the same quality as that of the first season.
Aside from that this anime truly is a piece of art. The cream of the crop you might say and it will always remain in the anime hall of fame. This anime was the one that showed what could be done with an anime, it showed the true potential that anime possessed. It made me laugh, it made my cry, it made my question ideals, morality and principles. It made me think. That is why I love this anime and I know you will too.
