The story of Black Cat mainly circulates around Train Hartnet aka Black cat. He is an assassin of secret organization “Chronos”. He bears the mark “XIII”. He is mainly asocial, quiet and apathetic due to the environment he has grown up in however a radical change in his personality appeared when he met a sweeper named Saya. Her words and ways of living brought change in Train’s way of living and he was greatly influenced by her way of living. But in a fateful incident Saya dies and Train decides to quit Chronos and stop killing people. He continues his life as a sweeper with two new found friends Sven and eve.
Black cat starts off bit slow and in the initial stages it can be hard to understand where the story is going till episode 6 or 7. From then on it really kicks off. There are one or two fillers in the later stages but nothing significant to change the enjoyment of the anime. In terms of environment of the show there are clearly two sections. The dark atmosphere of the first 6 episodes and the more light-hearted 2nd half of the show.
There are different types of characters in Black Cat most of them are likable. The character developments are okay in black cat. Train and Eve have the most noticeable character development during the course of the anime. But characters like Creed or Sven hardly shows any character development. Sven was on per with our protagonist Train and he definitely added ‘humor’ element nicely to the anime. Saya is probably the fan favorite. It was a shame that she had so less screen time. Nonetheless, all characters were of Black Cat likable. Well, may be except Creed.
Here are some notable characters from the anime:
Black Cat does not have mind blowing animation that we are used to seeing nowadays since it was animated in the early 2000s. Yet the animation was good compared to the standards of the time. The characters and surroundings are well drawn and colors are very distinguished. Personally I really liked the art style and animation.
Here are some screenshots from the anime:
One of the best features of Black cat is its music. The Opening theme is okay. The closing is really good but they saved the best for the action and suspense scenes. The musics are well timed and really gets you in the mood during those scenes. There are scenes which may not be the greatest but you’ll continue to watch just because of the music.
As an anime Black Cat has its fair share of flaws. It is not as deep as trigun or action packed as Hellsing. But in the end, we watch anime to be entertained and trust me Black cat has tons of it.
Black Cat has a different way of presenting the story than the manga. There are some noticeable difference in character appearance as well. So anyone who read the manga 1st will find black cat a bit awkward. But it does not men that it’s bad. Black Cat is a very enjoyable anime and I loved the show. I would recommend it for everyone.
